Project Upgrade 2005 was a joint venture of cooperation between the 15thWhitley Bay Scout Group and Whitley Bay Explorer Scouts. Whilst the Scout Group continues to control and manage the cottage, the Explorer Scouts who are aged 14 – 18 years old provide the necessary labour and skills to maintain and ultimately improve the facility so that youth groups and community groups can continue to use, and benefit from the outdoor experience of Chesters Scout Cottage.

The provision of two wood burning stoves, one of which provides hot water to the kitchen and bathroom areas. We also upgraded the bedrooms replacing the alpine-style sleeping platform with bunk beds.

Stainless steel work benches and cooker hobs were installed replacing old wood units making the kitchen more hygienic and functional.

A new staircase was installed making the process of going upstairs a lot safer!

In 2014 we fitted new double glazed windows to the cottage which makes it warmer and more habitable during the winter months.

In 2015 we started to install a lighting circuit through out the cottage, whilst the new system is not as ‘romantic’ as the Tilley lamps or the gas lamps it is certainly safer and we strongly advise all participants to use the system work also started in replacing the ceilings in all of the bedrooms and on the staircase.

During the early months of 2016 we completed the plastering of the ceilings upstairs and in April /May redecoration of the cottage inside is under way.

We have also serviced the wood burning stoves making them more efficient hopefully.
