Young Leaders

Young Leaders Scheme

The Young Leaders scheme is available to all Explorer Scouts and can be used for your DofE Volunteering section as well as for gaining vital skills in teamwork and leadership. For more information on the Young Leader scheme, please visit the Scout Association website.

As a Young leader you will help with either a Beaver, Cub or Scout group, assisting the adult leader team with weekly meetings, activities and camps.

Beavers are the youngest group in scouting with members being 6-8 years old. Their meetings are shortest and are mainly games oriented.

Cubs age between 8 and 10.5 years old and begin to go on longer camps and enjoy more challenging activities.

Scouts are the oldest section that utilise Young leaders, their members are between 10.5 and 14 years old and require new challenges and skills from scouting.

The Young Leader missions are four challenges that every Young Leader aims to complete during their time as a Young Leader. On completion of the Young Leader training scheme and all four missions you will be presented with your Young Leader belt to recognise your achievement.

The Young Leader training scheme consists of a number of modules that you will complete. The modules or training scheme is delivered by Whitley Bay Explorer Scouts Young Leader leader team (Ania Swann, Tony Bennet and Vicky Ross) and usually one module is run per month on a week night. The topics covered in the training modules help Young Leaders to understand their role and develop leadership skills.
